The delegation, which includes Professor James Gomes (Dean International Programmes), Professor Naresh Bhatnagar (Dean Research & Development) and Dr Archana Trivedi (Research Development Coordinator), will enjoy a tour of the campus which includes highlights of UC research and innovation including QuakeCoRE and HIT Lab NZ, before giving a formal introductory lecture to staff and visitors from partnering research institutions.

It’s the first visit by the delegation to Aotearoa New Zealand since the two institutions partnered in 2020, just prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, and follows a visit by a UC delegation to India in February of this year for the 2024 QS Summit in Chennai.

Professor Clemency Montelle was part of the UC delegation and in addition to Professor Matthew Wilson, received one of four inaugural IIT-Delhi India-New Zealand Centre Fellowships, recognising their leadership and expertise in their respective fields.

Professor Montelle’s research aims to explore the mathematical and astronomical traditions of Indian knowledge systems and their connections to modern science and technology, while Professor Wilson’s research aims to contribute to the development of technologies for monitoring and mitigating water hazards.

Today’s visit reinforces the objectives both organisations have committed to in respect to building a broader, ongoing relationship that enable future opportunities for teaching partnerships, and research and innovation collaborations.

The trip was facilitated by the IIT-Delhi India-New Zealand Centre, a joint initiative between IIT-Delhi and Aotearoa's eight universities. The delegation came to UC following visits to North Island universities earlier in the week, and will be spending Friday 3 May with the Universities of Otago and Lincoln on the latter’s campus.

The IIT-Delhi India-New Zealand Centre aims to bolster academic and cultural exchange between India and New Zealand through joint research in climate change, disaster management, urban planning, and environmental monitoring, areas important to both countries.
