The Undercroft is a busy and energetic student social and event space at the heart of campus.
Transformed from a brutalist basement that was utilised as a bike shelter, the development won the Architecture Now 2014 Interior Award in the civic category. It was viewed by the judges as "a testament to the vibrancy and collaboration that can fuel, and seems to be driving the Christchurch reconstruction".
The Undercroft is currently the retail hub of the University, housing the Copy Centre, Pharmacy, Bank and ITMs along with numerous cafes and food outlets. It is also home to the offices of the UCSA until its new building is completed in 2019.
