WiE CAN – Women in Engineering Residential Programme
University of Canterbury
Are you interested in making a real difference to society? Are you looking to find solutions to help people have better lives? Are you interested in designing new technology? We have a great opportunity for you!
The University of Canterbury’s College of Engineering is running our first ever Women in Engineering Residential Programme for school students.
We are calling it “WiE CAN” – pronounced WE CAN. Why? Because we CAN change the world.
When and where is it held?
WiE CAN will run from 21-24 January (3.5 days) over the school holidays. Students will arrive on Sunday 20 January in the evening. The programme will finish by 12pm on Thursday 24 January.
Students will be based at the University of Canterbury’s College of Engineering, in Christchurch, and will stay in one of our own UC Halls of Residence, getting a real university student experience!
Is it for me? Am I eligible?
You must be in Year 12 when you apply (going into Year 13 in 2019) and over 16 years old when you attend in January 2019. This programme is for female students only. It is open to students from around NZ, from any high school. You must be taking Science and Maths subjects at school.
Why should I apply?
We want to inspire the next generation of female engineers, by giving you this opportunity to find out more about studying engineering and career paths, and opening your eyes to all the possibilities available to you.
Engineering and technology touch all aspects of our everyday lives. Engineering is a field with wide social impact, relevant to all parts of society, and is changing fast to meet the future. Engineering feats are everywhere, just look around you! It’s also a great chance to experience what UC has to offer and our new engineering facilities.
What will I do while I’m at WiE CAN?
We have a great programme for you! You will get hands-on experience learning about what engineers “do” and how they contribute to society. Our sessions will cover aspects of chemical engineering, bioengineering, nanotechnology and more! You will meet our lecturers and current engineering students. We will have visiting guest speakers who are working in the industry to showcase the cool projects they work on. A full social programme will be put on in the evenings, so you can experience everything UC and Christchurch has to offer. Get a real UC student experience!
What is the cost?
It’s FREE!!! That’s right, as it’s our first ever WiE CAN programme, we’re letting students come free of cost! Spaces are limited, we will only accept 60 girls on this programme, so entry will be competitive.
Acceptance will be based on your application form, which will include a statement on why you are interested in attending, your academic achievements and a reference letter from a teacher at your school. Details will be on the application form, available in July.
Yes, really! We will cover your stay in the halls of residence, your food, and the entire programme costs. We will even give you up to $100 travel voucher to cover your travel costs if you are outside of Christchurch. It’s a pretty great experience!
Applications open on Monday 9 July 2018, so check back then for the application form.
Applications will close on Friday 17 August 2018.
