Graduate Diploma in Education and Learning

Overview

This new Graduate Diploma in Education and Learning gives students who are interested in education, but who have not completed the full requirements to be a registered teacher, a chance to enhance their employment opportunities in non-teaching, complementary roles in education or other sectors.

Note that this qualification is only open to enrolments in 2018 for students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Teaching, the Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Primary) or the Graduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning (Secondary).

Entry requirements

Normally the minimum requirement is a three-year bachelor’s degree from a New Zealand university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent.

If you gained your qualifications overseas, these will need to be assessed to make sure they are of an equivalent standard.

Qualification specific requirements

The Graduate Diploma in Education and Learning is open only to students who do not meet all of the requirements in one of the following qualifications:

Qualification structure and duration

Students who do not complete all the requirements of their teaching graduate diploma can credit their completed courses to this qualifcation.

The GradDipEdLn requires 120 points of coursework. It would normally be completed full-time over one year.

Career opportunities

Graduates of this new graduate diploma may be employed in early childhood settings where teacher registration is not required. Graduates will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of aspects of learning within the New Zealand education system and curriculum, as well as educational principles and theories. They will have the background on which to build additional skills and knowledge in complementary fields related to education.
