Halls of residence and villages

Campus Living Villages Ltd offers accommodation specifically tailored to your needs. If you are coming to UC to complete a Foundation Studies (FS) course or for the University Transfer Programme (UTP), accommodation can be arranged in a fully-catered hall of residence or in a self-catered apartment commencing in February, June or October for a minimum of two UCIC semesters. This is the easiest and recommended option as your accommodation can be arranged before you arrive.  Regular events and activities are arranged for residents and the friendly staff are available to help and support you at any time.

Ilam Apartments or Sonoda Christchurch Campus offer you independent apartment-style living with the bonus of living on-campus in a supportive community and are ideal for individual students over 18 years of age. You will have your own fully-furnished room and share a kitchen equipped with basic essentials, bathroom, living and laundry facilities.  The apartments are home to students of all ages, at all levels of study and from all over the world.

Waitakiri Village offers a smaller, quieter living-learning community of 70 residents and is dedicated to the first-year student experience.  The village is fully-catered with 2 Residential Assistants living on-site to support students and arrange workshops, events and tutorials.  Free transport will be provided to and from campus each day.

Residential costs will vary depending on what option you select and will be advised as soon as possible.  In addition to residential costs, a package will be put together to include:

  • $300 Administration Fee
  • $200 Residents' Association Fee
  • Linen and bedding pack
  • A Welcome Pack.

Payments must be made before you arrive unless alternative arrangements have been made.

If you are continuing your study for UC's Semester 1 or Semester 2, you can extend your stay by contacting the hall office. A further application is not required.

Apply for the UCIC accommodation package

Please complete the online application form for accommodation selecting "UCIC 2016" as your term. The option to select your preferred hall or village will be outlined in your contract.  We recommend that you apply as soon as your UCIC course is confirmed.

Student details will be confirmed with UCIC before applications are processed. Accommodation is dependent on availability. Contract dates are as follows for a minimum of two UCIC semesters:

UCIC Semester 1 (February 2016 start)

8 February 2016 - 13 June 2016 (18 weeks)

UCIC Semester 2 (June 2016 start)

13 June 2016 - 10 October 2016 (17 weeks)

UCIC Semester 3 (October 2016 start)

10 October 2016 - 13 February 2017 (16 weeks)

University-managed flats

A preferred option to renting privately, you have all the benefits of independent living in the knowledge that you are supported by the University.  Rooms are fully-furnished and located close to campus.  There is a minimum stay of 12 weeks with room rates from NZ$210 per week including power.  To enquire further, please complete an Online Application Form selecting Off-Campus Housing as your term.

An alternative to Waitakiri Village or for students under 18 years of age, homestay is living with a New Zealand family in the family home.  The room rate is NZ$260 per week plus a NZ$330 placement fee. There is a minimum stay of 8 weeks with at least 2 weeks' notice required to make a placement, although earlier applications are recommended.  Contact Accommodation Services for an application form.

Private Renting

An alternative to university-managed flats, renting privately generally is for a fixed term of 12 months and is a private arrangement between you and your landlord.  Not all properties are fully-furnished and this would need to be factored into your budget as well as transport, insurance, food and power.  This is not a recommended option for when you first arrive in New Zealand.

Apply for a free airport pickup

If you are arriving in New Zealand for the first time, you are eligible for a free airport pickup service. You will be picked up on arrival at Christchurch International Airport and delivered to your pre-arranged accommodation

Complete the airport pickup form to request this service.
