Ethnic diversity in NZ parliament declines

30 November 2023

Since 1996, New Zealand’s parliament has become increasingly diverse – until now.

HOW TO APPLY

Following the 2020 election, New Zealand was reported to have “one of the most diverse parliaments in the world” by CNN. However, the 2023 election and a swing to the right means New Zealand's Parliament has become less diverse in terms of different ethnic backgrounds, suggesting some political parties should reconsider the makeup of their candidate lists and memberships.

UC Political Science and International Relations Professor Alexander Tan and PhD candidate Neel Vanvari explain how different political parties have varying commitments to ethnic diversity on The Conversation and the impact on democracy. Read the article here.
