Doctoral Orientation
Doctoral Orientation is a chance for new doctoral students to meet staff from Te Kura Tāura | UC Graduate School and learn what to expect in the first stage of their doctoral journey.
Kick-Start Your Thesis
These sessions are intended to help new graduate research students get started and gain momentum early in their study at UC. If you are in the early stages of a Master’s or Doctoral thesis, you are warmly invited to attend the next “Kick-start your thesis” workshop.
Speakers will share top tips and answer your questions, and will include representatives from Pokapū Pūkenga Ako | Academic Skills Centre, Te Kura Tāura | UC Graduate School and Ngā Puna Mātauraka Ako | UC Library.
It’s also a great opportunity to meet other thesis writers who are also just starting their postgrad studies.

Decoding Research Ethics: The why and how of your ethics application
In this session, the co-chair of the Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) will share insights about the need for research ethics committee review and how the HREC works at UC. Booking Etiquette
Workshops and events at the University of Canterbury are free and held at various locations across campus. Please check the specific locations for each event.
We expect you to maintain professionalism and adhere to our booking guidelines:
- Check your university email: Facilitators might send updates about last-minute changes or pre-session tasks.
- Be punctual: Workshops start promptly, so please arrive on time.
- Be prepared: Come ready to engage and participate in the session.
Cancelling your registration
If you are unable to attend a workshop due to illness or a scheduling conflict, please cancel your registration using the link provided in your confirmation email. This will open up a spot for anyone on a waitlist to attend the workshop/event and allow us to adjust catering numbers where applicable.
Arriving late
If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, the facilitator may not allow you to join the session.
Frequent ‘No-Shows’
If you miss three sessions without cancelling, your supervisor may be notified.
