Tell us more about Zincovery?
Zincovery is a start-up scaling up a revolutionary technology for zinc recycling, which can produce zinc at a significantly lower cost and with a much smaller carbon footprint.
What goals do you have for Zincovery in the next five years?
Our goal is to scale the Zincovery technology up to a full commercial plant and expand the company internationally.
Can you share with us what your journey has been like to get to where you are today?
The learning curve of business and venture has been very steep. This has made my journey so far difficult but also incredibly exciting and rewarding.
Was chemical and process engineering something you’ve always been interested in? What led to your decision to come to UC to study a BE(Hons) and ME?
I’ve always been interested in engineering, but I didn’t decide to explore chemical engineering until after my first year. I liked chemistry and thought I might brew beer for a living at the time. The University of Canterbury, along with Auckland, were considered top-tier universities for engineering. Additionally, my passion for the outdoors and proximity to the mountains drove me to choose UC. I decided to pursue my ME as a low-risk pathway to test technologies in the zinc industry—worst case scenario, I’d come out with a degree and no business.
Do you have any memories or experiences that stand out from your time at UC that you’d like to share?
I absolutely loved my time at UC. The student culture and clubs were fantastic, and I’ve made several lifelong friends. Lastly, the connections I built at UC with professors and classmates have been essential to the success of my venture.
Do you have any additional comments?
University is what you make of it. I would encourage prospective students to work hard, take calculated risks, try new things, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
