General Postgraduate Scholarships

Purpose: To support students studying in a Master's or doctoral programme with research on a topic related to ageing and its effects on individuals and society. 

Value: Financial assistance to a value of $6,000 for one year.

Closing date: 31 October

Purpose: To recognise the achievement and commitment of students with a specific learning difficulty who are studying at 300-level or above at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: Financial assistance at a value determined by funds available and stated in the offer of the award.

Closing date: 31 March

Purpose: To support students with a vision impairment in undertaking study at UC. Applicants must have a vision impairment of 6/18 or less with both eyes and best possible correction, or less than 20 degrees of vision. 

Value: Each scholarship offers financial assistance at a value of $10,000 per 120 points of enrolment for one year.

Closing date: 31 October

Purpose: Essay Prize - open to current undergraduate students and recent graduates of UC, this prize recognises excellence in English composition. Applicants submit an original piece of writing of their own sole composition, either unpublished or published, which deals imaginatively with any theme: an essay, a short story, a poem or group of poems, or a short play.

Value: First prize = $2,000; Second prize = $1,000; Third prize = $500

Closing date: 30 September

Purpose: To support female students studying towards a research master’s degree at UC.

Value: Tuition fees at the domestic rate, to the points value of the qualifying master's project (up to 120 points).

Closing date: 31 October

Purpose: To support postgraduate students undertaking research at UC on a topic related to aviation. Suitable topics for the research include, but are not limited to: (a) Computational or experimental fluid mechanics; (b) High-performance materials or structures; or (c) Aircraft economics, operation, control, or communication systems. 

Value: Financial assistance up to a value of $6,000 for up to 120 points.

Closing date: 31 October

Purpose: To support postgraduate diploma, honours, and master’s students whose study is facilitated through the Ngāi Tahu Research Centre at UC.

Value: (a) Financial assistance at a value of $16,000 (for students with whakapapa Ngāi Tahu) or $12,000 (open); and (b) tuition fees at the Aotearoa New Zealand domestic rate + SSL; for one year.

Closing date: 31 October

Purpose: To support those directly affected by the 2019 Christchurch Mosque attacks to study at UC, or another accredited education provider.

Value: Financial assistance up to the value of $5,000 per 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date: The scholarship is advertised as funds become available.

Purpose: To recognise and support international students with strong academic abilities from China or Hong Kong who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at UC.

Value: A contribution to tuition fees of $10,000 paid in the first year of study.

Closing date: 24 October (S1 start) and 30 April (S2 start) 

Purpose: To recognise and support international students with strong academic abilities from India who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at UC.

Value: A contribution to tuition fees of $10,000 paid in the first year of study.

Closing date: 24 October (S1 start) and 30 April (S2 start) 

Purpose: To recognise and support international students with strong academic abilities from Southeast Asia who are beginning their educational journey in New Zealand at UC.

Value: A contribution to tuition fees of $10,000 paid in the first year of study.

Closing date: 24 October (S1 start) and 30 April (S2 start) 

Purpose: To support students at UC who have completed at least one academic year at the University and whose earlier youth was spent substantially in Southland and whose parents, or guardian, are resident in Southland at the time of the award.

Value: Financial assistance at a value of $1,000 per annum; for two years.
