Engineering & Forestry Postgraduate Scholarships

UC offers a diverse range of scholarships to support students studying a postgraduate degree. Take a look at some of the postgraduate scholarships available for students studying in the Engineering or Forestry disciplines.

HOW TO APPLY

This is a summary list of many of the UC Scholarships that are available for students enrolled in an Engineering or Forestry postgraduate* degree at UC. 

Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria so check the details of each one to find out if you're eligible.

These scholarships are subject to funding availability and are reviewed each year. The UC Scholarships Office administers most of these scholarships. Please search our scholarships database for all scholarships currently available.

Engineering

Arup Fire Engineering Scholarship

Details: To support Master's students in Fire Engineering at the University of Canterbury. 

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $4,000, for one year.

Closing date: 02 December

Coastal & Ocean Engineering Conference Fund

Details: Applicants must be enrolled in a research programme in the Department of Civil & Natural Resource Engineering or Geography, and be intending to present a paper at a coastal and/or ocean conference.

Value: Grants from an annual fund of $10,000 are available. Individual grants do not normally exceed the following values: (a) For conferences in Aotearoa New Zealand: $1,000; (b) For conferences in Australia: $1,500; (c) For conferences in other countries: $3,000.

Closing date: 31 March and 30 September if funds available

CWF Hamilton & Co. Ltd Master's Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

Details: To support students studying towards a Master of Engineering (ME) degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $16,500 for up to 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date: 31 October

Dick & Mary Earle Scholarship in Technology

Details: To support and encouragement of postgraduate research into one or both of these fields: (a) innovation and product development; or (b) bioprocess technology. Applicants must be NZ citizens or permanent residents who have resided in Aotearoa New Zealand for at least three years immediate preceding the year of selection. NB: this is a Universities NZ scholarship.

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with Master's or Doctoral study, up to the value of $17,000 per annum for up to 2 years (Masters) or $25,000 per annum for up to 3 years (Doctoral).

Closing date: 01 July

Electric Power Engineering Centre (EPECentre) Postgraduate Scholarship

Details: To recognise academic achievement by postgraduate students at the University of Canterbury who are specialising in Electric Power EngineeringApplicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or permanent residents. 

Value: Financial assistance of up to $12,500 for one year for Master of Engineering students; or $25,000 per annum for up to three years for PhD students.

Closing date: Applications can be submitted any time. Applications must be submitted in writing to the Director of the Electric Power Engineering Centre (EPECentre) - see scholarship details in link provided.

Energy Education Trust of NZ Master's Scholarship - University of Canterbury

Details: To support full time students engaged din the first year of a programme for a research master's degree at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury whose proposed project is relevant to the energy needs of Aotearoa New Zealand. Each year, at least five scholarships are available nationally. Applicants must be citizens of Aotearoa New Zealand or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

Value: Financial assistance at a value of $8,000 for one year.

Closing date: 31 March

Fire & Emergency New Zealand Fire Engineering Scholarship

Details: For students enrolling full-time in the Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering (MEFE) or the Master of Engineering Studies in Fire Engineering (MEngSt(Fire)) degree programme.

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, to a value of $20,000 per annum for one year (MEngSt(Fire) students) or two years (MEFE students). Students may be offered 18 months full-time employment (at market rates) with Fire & Emergency NZ after completion of the MEFE or MEngSt(Fire) degree programme.

Closing date: 30 November

Francis Small Scholarship

Details: To support full-time students studying in an ME degree in either Chemical and Process Engineering, Civil Engineering (including Natural Resources Engineering), Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering. Applicants must be Aotearoa NZ citizens or holders of Aotearoa NZ residence class visas.

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $20,000 for up to the points value of the qualifying programme for an ME degree.

Closing date: 31 October (in odd-numbered years only)

H J Hopkins Postgraduate Scholarship in Civil Engineering

Details: To support students undertaking full-time postgraduate study in the field of Civil Engineering.

Value: Financial assistance of up to $5,000 per annum, plus tuition fees at the domestic rate, for up to 18 months (ME students) or three years (PhD students). During, or following completion of the degree, an H J Hopkins Scholar may apply for funds to contribute towards the cost of travel, for the purpose of study or working the field of civil engineering. The travel grant may be for an amount of up to $5,000.

Henry Kelsey Scholarship

Details: To provide financial assistance to a student undertaking postgraduate research towards a Masters or Doctoral degree at a New Zealand university or research institution, studying muscular function, including - but not limited to - the causes and treatment of muscular dysfunction. NB: This is a Universities New Zealand Scholarship

Value: Up to $15,000 per annum for up to two years for Master's study or three years for Doctoral study.

Closing date: 01 October

Kevin Spring Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Civil Engineering

Details: To support research Master's students studying in Civil Engineering. Students must be enrolled in an ME degree in Civil Engineering, including ENEQ650. Applicants must be Aotearoa NZ citizens or holders of Aotearoa NZ residence class visas.

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $40,000 for one year. Provided a suitable position is available, Silvester / Clark Consulting Engineers and Steel Construction NZ may offer the recipient a paid internship during tenure of the scholarship and an opportunity for employment following completion of the ME programme.

Closing date: 30 November

Ngau Boon Keat Postgraduate Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

Details: For students enrolled in the Department of Mechanical Engineering either in a Master of Engineering degree, a Master of Engineering Studies degree, or a doctoral degree.

Value: Financial assistance up to the value of $25,000 per annum for up to 120 points of enrolment (Master's students) or 360 points of enrolment (PhD students).

Closing date: 01 November

NZ SFPE Fire Engineering Scholarship

Details: To support a student enrolled full-time in the Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering programme at the University of Canterbury, to undertake fundamental research into fire safety and fire science.

Value: Financial assistance at the value of $5,000 for one year.

Closing date: 30 November

Orion Master's Energy Scholarship

Details: To support students studying towards a Master’s degree with research on a topic related to the energy field. Applicants must be enrolled in either: (a) a programme for a Master's degree that includes a thesis, dissertation, or research project with a credit weighting of at least 90 points, relating to the energy field in the broadest sense; or (b) a programme for a Master of Engineering Studies (MEngSt) degree in Renewable Energy, that includes a 30-point research project.

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, at a value of $16,500 for up to 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date: 31 October

Tait Communications Master's Research Scholarship

Details: For students studying in a Master's programme with research related to Critical Information and Communications Technology (CICT). The proposed research must be of relevance to the current interests of Tait Communications. Preference will be given to applicants undertaking relevant research in conjunction with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering including the Wireless Research Centre at the University. Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or holders of New Zealand residence class visas.

Value: Financial assistance up to the value of $15,000, for one year.

Closing date: 01 November

UC Department of Civil & Natural Resources Engineering Summer Research Scholarship

Details: To support students undertaking short term research projects and other experiments to provide a foundation for their studies in the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering at UC. Applicants must be intending to undertake a programme of study within the Department of Civil & Natural Resources Engineering at UC within 12 months of the completion of tenure. 

Value: Financial assistance to the value of $6,000 for 3 months - scholarships will be made available as projects and funds become available.

Closing date: 30 November. Applications must be made to the Department of Civil and Natural Resources Engineering by 30 November 

UC Engineering Research Master's Fees Scholarship

Details: To support students to study full-time towards a research master’s degree in the Faculty of Engineering at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury. Applicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens or holders of Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visas.

Value: Tuition fees for up to 120 points of enrolment.

Closing date: Scholarships are made available as funds permit. Applications must be made through the Faculty of Engineering.

Forestry

McKelvey Award                                                                                                           

Details: To support master’s and PhD students studying Forestry by contributing to expenses associated with presenting a paper at a relevant conference. In the absence of suitable candidates, the applications may be opened to eligible students seeking support to meet other costs associated with their study. Up to two grants are available annually.

Value: One award of $1,000 or two awards of $500 each.

Closing date: 01 April and 01 September (if the available fund has not been allocated in the 1 April round).

Owen Browning Scholarship in Forestry

Details: To support full-time postgraduate students studying Forestry or Forest Engineering at UC. Applicants need to be enrolled in thesis study for an MForSc, part II of an MSc in Environmental Science (100% supervised by Kura Ngahere | School of Forestry academics) or a PhD programme in Forestry or Forest Engineering. Normally, there may be only two holders of the scholarship at a time, typically one master’s student and one PhD student.

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, up to a value of $4,500 per annum; for up to 120 points of enrolment (Masters) or 240 points of enrolment (PhD).

Closing date: 01 November

Pukehou Poutu Scholarship

Details: To support postgraduate study in either agricultural or silvicultural science. Applicants must be graduates of a New Zealand university and be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens. NB: This is a Universities New Zealand Scholarship.

Value: Financial assistance with the costs associated with university study, up to a value of $10,000 for one year.
