Dr.-Ing. Maria Freese has joined HIT Lab NZ in the Faculty of Engineering for three months as an Erskine Fellow.

Maria joins us from the Otto-van-Guericke University in Magdeburg, Germany. She is a group leader at the Chair of Production Systems and Automation, working on Simulation Gaming and other novel approaches in teaching and research. 

Maria obtained her Bachelor in Psychology and a master’s degree in Human-Technology-Interaction from the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. From 2013 to 2017, she worked as a doctoral candidate at the German Aerospace Center in Braunschweig. After this, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands (2018 – 2023), except from January to August 2022, when she worked as a researcher at Raccoon Serious Games (commercial serious gaming company) in the Netherlands. Maria has developed games for research and learning, and is an expert in developing, facilitating, and debriefing simulation games.

Maria is will support the MHIT program with her experience in project-based learning and will also be happy to provide feedback on any other projects underway. She will also teach into the ISAGA Summer school in Sydney and is co-chair of the ISAGA conference taking place at UC in July.
