Ways to give from Canada

24 June 2024

We are pleased to offer our Canadian donors the opportunity to support UC students, research, and programmes, and to claim any tax benefits available under Canadian law through establishing a donation option in Canadian dollars through partnership with the Chapel & York Canada Foundation*.

HOW TO APPLY

About the Chapel & York Canada Foundation

Chapel & York is an organization that specializes in helping other organizations with international fundraising. They provide services to make it easier for charities and nonprofits to raise funds across borders, offering expertise in areas like tax-deductible donations and setting up legal entities in different countries.

They help organizations like Cancer Research UK, the Royal Albert Hall, McGill University and, of course, the University of Canterbury, with their global fundraising efforts.

UC's Key Priorities

Postgraduate scholarships

Postgraduate scholarships — Master’s and Doctoral — are vital to research, supporting senior researchers, and conducting independent inquiries.

However, the cost of studies, with its emphasis on practical work and expert guidance, can be a barrier. Your donation helps alleviate financial burdens, empowering students to focus on their studies and research. Postgraduate scholarships may also provide living stipends along with tuition fees.

Tuition fees start from NZ$11,200 per student per year.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Many students leaving high school face the difficult decision of whether to pursue their aspirations of higher education or going straight into paid employment.

Some scholarship programmes, like Te Kakau a Māui, also provide wraparound support through community building, mentorship, success coaching, and career path guidance.

This empowers students to maximise their university experience, leading to better outcomes and giving them a jumpstart in their professional lives.

Tuition fees start from NZ$8,800 per student per year.

Other ways to give

You can support the University of Canterbury students, research, and programmes in a way that’s most meaningful to you.

  • Talk to a fundraiser – please feel free to get in touch with Associate Director of Advancement Charu Uppal at charu.uppal@canterbury.ac.nz or +6433693365

  • Donor-Advised funds (DAFs) – Allow you to establish a charitable giving account in exchange for an immediate tax deduction and make grants to charities you care about.

  • Gifts of securities (Stocks, Bonds or Mutual Funds) – You can donate investments instead of selling them, which will help avoid capital gains tax on appreciated securities and receive a tax receipt for the fair market value of the donation. To donate stocks, bond, or mutual funds, please fill in the form here and select University of Canterbury Foundation from the dropdown menu.

  • Mail a cheque addressed to the Chapel & York Foundation in Canada with this accompanying form directing your donation to the University of Canterbury Foundation. If there is a particular cause that you would like your donation to go towards, please also specify this in the form.

  • Legacy Gifts - There are various ways to make a lasting and meaningful contribution to the University of Canterbury while advancing your financial and philanthropic objectives. A legacy gift can offer significant tax benefits by substantially reducing capital gains and estate taxes and providing immediate income to you or a beneficiary. Please contact Associate Director of Advancement Charu Uppal at charu.uppal@canterbury.ac.nz or +6433693365 for a confidential conversation about how we can help you fulfil your philanthropic needs through a bequest.

Please find an example of text to use in your will if you would like to leave a gift.

"I bequeath (amount or percentage of estate) to the Chapel & York Foundation to support the University of Canterbury Foundation, for the purpose of (the cause you would like to direct your gift towards)."

If you have already left the University of Canterbury Foundation a gift in your will through the Chapel & York Canada Foundation, we would love to know so we can acknowledge and thank you in your lifetime. You would become a member of the University of Canterbury Legacy Society and we will keep you up to date with the happenings at UC.
  • RRSP or RRIF — You can make the University of Canterbury Foundation the beneficiary of your Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) or Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF), which means the remaining funds in your account goes towards supporting you care about after your lifetime. This can offset taxes owed on your RRSP or RRIF, and your estate will receive a donation receipt for the full value of the gift.

To do this, you would need to obtain a change of beneficiary form from the plan administrator and name the Chapel & York Canada Foundation as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your RRSP account, and direct the gift towards the University of Canterbury Foundation.

If you have made the University of Canterbury Foundation a beneficiary of your RRSP or RRIF through the Chapel & York Canada Foundation, we would love to know so we can thank you in your lifetime.

Except in Quebec, a charity can be named directly as benefiary of RRSP and RRIF assets with full tax benefits, and without needing to subject them to probate. Gifts made in the year of decease are now creditable up to 100 percent of net income on th terminal return, and the credit will always offset the tax on the RRSP or RRIF distributions. With these advantages, leftover funds can be given to charity at no net cost.
