Ways to Give
- Matching Gifts
Did you know your employer might match your charitable donations? It’s a great way to double your impact. Just check with your HR department to see if they offer this benefit.
- Gift Aid
If you're a UK taxpayer, you can make your donation go even further with Gift Aid. This UK government scheme allows the University of Canterbury NZ Trust Fund to claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate—at no extra cost to you! So, a £100 gift becomes £125. We’ll share the necessary details with HM Revenue and Customs to claim the Gift Aid. Note that donations from companies don’t qualify for Gift Aid, but they can still save on corporation tax by treating the donation as an allowable expense.
- Payroll Giving
For UK taxpayers paid under PAYE (Pay As You Earn), payroll giving is an easy way to support the University regularly. Your donations are taken directly from your gross pay, giving you immediate tax relief at your highest rate. Interested? Just ask your employer for an application form to start donating through payroll giving.
- Giving Stocks and Shares
Donating stocks and shares is one of the most tax-efficient ways to give. In the UK, you can claim tax relief on the market value of the shares on the day you donate, plus any associated costs like broker fees. For example, if you donate £1,000 worth of shares and you’re a higher rate taxpayer, you could reduce your income tax by up to £500. Plus, you won’t have to pay any Capital Gains Tax on the increase in value of the shares.
- Legacy Giving
Leaving a gift to charity in your will is a wonderful way to support the causes you care about and can also reduce your Inheritance Tax (IHT) bill. If you leave 10 percent or more of your net estate to charity, there’s even more of a tax benefit. Did you know that October and March are Free Wills Months in the UK? If you’re 55 or older, you can make or update a will for free with a participating solicitor. For more details, visit freewillsmonth.org.uk.
