Te Kakau a Māui Programme

15 August 2024

Launched in 2023 as part of UC’s 150th anniversary celebrations, Te Kakau a Māui Programme has supported over 300 students committed to making a positive change in the world. The programme has provided a mix of financial assistance and a comprehensive enrichment programme which is delivering impressive results.

HOW TO APPLY

Building on this, from 2025, Te Kakau a Māui will support 130 new students each year and is open to aspiring leaders who are eligible for StudyLink’s Student Allowance. Each student will receive financial assistance and the opportunity to take part in a comprehensive enrichment programme throughout their undergraduate degree.

Programme aim

The programme is guided by UC’s framework of Ngā Uara | Our Values, to build capability in ākonga using manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and tiakitanga, enabling them to thrive and setting them on the path for life-long learning.

Programme overview

Delivered by UC’s Kia Angitu Student Success Team, the programme is driven through Whanaungatanga, Success and Careers coaching sessions to build connection and a sense of belonging at UC.

  • Whanaungatanga – Social get-togethers to build and foster connection, including both on and off campus activities
  • Success Coaching – Facilitated by dedicated Success Coaches, these group and 1:1 sessions contribute to the development of academic mindset and resilience in ākonga.
  • Careers Coaching– Facilitated by a dedicated Careers Coach, these sessions centre on career development learning.

Additionally, the programme includes:

Alumni Mentoring – Alumni are matched with ākonga based on career aspirations and industry knowledge for formal and ad hoc mentoring and support. This may be 1:1 or in a group setting.

PALS (Peer Assisted Learning Support) – A peer to peer programme that brings ākonga together in regular group study sessions that are aligned with their course. PALS is available to first- and second-year students.

Events – A range of events are held throughout the year with a variety of guest speakers to help students get the most from their UC experience, strengthen whanaungatanga, and build a sense of belonging. This includes a three-day camp.
