Harold Wellman (1909-99) was one of the most innovative and influential New Zealand geologists of the 20th century. He is often remembered for his discovery of the Alpine Fault, followed by the startling proposal that the opposite sides had moved apart by 480 kilometres. Significantly, he is also the father of neotectectonics in New Zealand - that is, the study of how the crust has deformed in the recent past and how it continues to deform today.
