Bsc Geography 2018, MURR 2020

Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Transport's Urban Development and Public Transport Team

HOW TO APPLY

Tell us about your role as a Policy Advisor for Te Manatū Waka - Ministry of Transport (New Zealand). What does this involve?

My role involves developing, reviewing, and analysing policies for a variety of transport issues, specifically public transport and transport's role in urban development and land use. I've gained a greater understanding of Aotearoa's transport system and the impact it has to housing and land use, the ecological environment, our communities, energy sector, economy, and more through this role. Specific areas I've worked on include interregional rail, public transport, urban growth partnerships, and rapid transit.

Is urban design, community development and transport something you have always been interested in?

Not directly! I've always been interested in how our communities and cities function, but I didn't know I could turn this into a career until I began my undergraduate degree in Geography. Completing my undergraduate degree sparked my interest to explore these concepts further and pursue a postgraduate degree. I ended up enrolling in the Masters of Urban Resilience and Renewal (MURR) which allowed me to learn more about communities and their interaction with the environments they navigate on a daily basis.

We see you are also the Social Media Manager for Intelligent Transport Systems New Zealand (ITSNZ). What led to your involvement in the Te Waka Rangatahi | Young Transport Professionals space?

I've been involved in the ITSNZ Young Transport Professionals group since I started my role at the Ministry, but only recently decided to join their committee. I wanted to be more involved because I've enjoyed attending the events and meeting like-minded peers in the sector. YTP also collaborate with other sector groups (like Young Engineers NZ) and it's been a great way to meet others working in similar fields.

You completed both your Undergraduate and Masters degrees here at UC. What was it that made you led to your decision to study further here at UC?

I decided to complete my Master's degree at UC because I liked the practical dissertation aspect of the MURR, and the fact that it only took a year to complete. Another reason was because of the lecturers in the Geography department who inspired and supported me throughout undergrad.

Was a Bachelor of Science what you had always envisioned yourself studying at university?

I've always known that I've wanted to study something Science-related but didn't know what subject to major in. I was drawn to Geography because of its relevance to current events and people's ability, or inability, to adapt to changes in their environment (like COVID pandemics or climate-related events). I pursued Human Geography because I enjoyed learning about the interaction between our physical spaces and our communities, and vice versa.

Any highlights or fond memories from your time at UC?

My fondest memories of UC were the people I met, and who I'm still good friends with today. I've also made new friends since graduating who are also UC alumni working in Wellington, and our connection to the UC helped jumpstart our friendships.
