"UC has a great research programme and offers the biotechnology programme that I wanted..."

HOW TO APPLY
From India to University of Canterbury, New Zealand

PhD in Biochemistry

Why did you decide to come to UC?

I was looking to do my Master’s in another country, and I saw that UC has a great research programme and offers the biotechnology programme that I wanted. The fees were more affordable than other universities, and I also preferred Christchurch because I come from a busy city and wanted a quieter, more peaceful place. I had such a great Master’s experience at UC and received a scholarship to continue my research, so I decided to stay here for my PhD.

How was your student experience?

Everyone at UC is so kind and very patient, from the academics to admin and technical staff. That made it much easier to feel comfortable. A standout example was how the Campus Living team arranged a cab ride from the airport to my student accommodation, which saved me a lot of anxiety. They were very welcoming and supportive before I even arrived. My fellow students were also very supportive.

What do you like most about UC?

The campus has so many fantastic facilities, like the library and labs. Having a pharmacy and health centre is very convenient. I love going to the gym to take classes and play sports, especially badminton. There are so many cafes and a wide variety of affordable food on campus. I also really love the 3D and vinyl printing in the MakerSpace.

What are the academic staff like?

I got a lot of support from all the academic staff and my supervisors, which helped me transition to the new environment quickly and easily. I was able to ask questions without being judged. UC has a great group of people, friendly and approachable. Everyone’s very flexible and open to collaborations.

What do you like about your studies and research at UC?

I like that I am making a difference in the field of cardiovascular disease. I know that even the small things I’m adding to the knowledge are making a positive change and that people can actually rely on this information.

Are there any support programmes or initiatives that you found particularly helpful?

UC hosts a huge amount of seminars for both your academic and personal growth which help you with things like looking for jobs and life after finishing your studies. The library inter-loan service is great, especially when you’re doing a lot of research. And the international student orientation day is something I will always be grateful for. I met so many people from all over the world and made a huge number of friends right off the bat.

How do you find life in New Zealand?

I love New Zealand. It’s always been a place I’ve dreamt of going to. I love the nature and beauty. It’s a very relaxing country, and Christchurch especially is so laid back. You can leave the city and within twenty minutes you’re in lush, green areas. In my home city, there’s a lot noise and traffic, so it’s really nice to come to a quieter, calmer place.

What did you get up to when you weren’t studying?

My friends and I explored a lot of Christchurch, going for walks, swims at the beach, and kayaking. We loved kayaking so much we actually ended up buying kayaks. We tried a lot of new restaurants and cafes. We also travelled around the country. It’s so easy to visit new cities and places, especially if you like scenic drives.

How well do you think your studies prepared you for your future career?

My PhD helped me develop a lot of skills that will definitely be useful for my future. I’m very confident going into the field and whatever job I end up working in. I know what I’m doing, and I can work independently or structured. These skills are already helping me in the many presentations I’m currently doing in my work as a Postdoctoral Fellow at UC.

You worked part-time while studying. What benefits did that provide?

My part-time job helped me hone my time management skills while helping me understand what working in New Zealand is like. It also helped me build my character and create a network that I still keep in touch with. It was all very helpful for my personal development.

Would you recommend UC to other international students?

I would 100% recommend UC. I would even go so far as to say don’t consider any other country! Come to UC and you will be taken care of all around.
