Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, with a minor in Power Engineering
Why did you choose to study at UC?
My decision to study at the University of Canterbury (UC) was influenced by a combination of factors. I initially came to Christchurch to attend Burnside High school. During my Year 13 Physics class, we had the opportunity to delve into UC’s Engineering Core. I distinctly remembered visiting the Electrical Engineering Wing and engaging in a fascinating experiment involving a small motor in the Power Machine Lab. I was genuinely impressed by the state-of-the-art lab facilities provided to students at UC.
Another factor that contributed to my decision to study at UC was during my time in Christchurch while attending Burnside High School, I developed a deep sense of familiarity with the city and its surroundings. The comfort and convenience of living in Christchurch, combined with the presence of close friends, played a pivotal role in my decision to study at UC.
What are the strengths of the programme?
My four-year journey studying Engineering at UC has equipped me not only with essential engineering theories but also provided various opportunities to nurture and expand my professional engineering skills through group projects and internship experiences.
The UC Engineering programme does not limit itself to theory alone. It is a dynamic journey that merges classroom learning with real-world exposure and industry connections. One personal highlight in my UC journey was the annual Power Convention organised by the EPE Centre, where Electrical Engineering students can interact with different companies across NZ’s Power Engineering Industry. This convention was especially significant for Electrical Engineering students like me that offered a unique platform to engage with leading companies within New Zealand's Power Engineering Industry and has ultimately led me to pursue a minor in Power Engineering.
What is the best thing about UC?
The best thing about UC, in my experience, goes beyond academics. Throughout my journey, I found that UC was not just an institution but a partner in my personal and academic growth.
UC’s holistic approach to student support includes a range of resources such as the Career Centre, student clubs, counselling services, and academic centres, making it a place where students from diverse backgrounds and cultures feel valued and included, and can thrive.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying in your degree area?
If you're considering studying Engineering, remember that it can be challenging, but it's also highly rewarding. Approach it with an open mind and a determination to learn and grow, and always be curious and make good use of the tutorials.
Why did you choose to come to New Zealand?
My decision to come to New Zealand was ignited by the vivid stories shared by a dear friend who had grown up in Christchurch. Intrigued by the friendly people, breathtaking scenery, and a real sense of belonging, I decided to work and build my life here after graduating from UC.
Have you taken part in any internships, placements, project work at UC? How did you find the experience?
I had the opportunity of participating in a transformative three-month electrical engineering internship within the Power Supply department at New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter (NZAS). It exposed me to the intricacies of the power industry, provided hands-on experience, and allowed me to contribute to real projects. It was a testament to the practical and industry-focused approach of UC's Engineering programme.
Where are you employed now?
I am currently employed by ElectroNet Limited, a Power Engineering Consulting Company located in Christchurch, New Zealand. My job position is Assistant Electrical Engineer.
How has your study experience at UC helped your work skills?
My educational journey at UC has not only provided me with academic knowledge but has also significantly contributed to the development of crucial work-related skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, report writing skills. These skills have proven instrumental in my current professional career.
