Edbert Livia

20 July 2023

"I enjoy meeting people of different cultural backgrounds, both students and staff..."

HOW TO APPLY

Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering

Motivated to make a difference through his studies in Civil Engineering, Edbert came to UC from Indonesia confident he was in the right place to follow his passion.

“UC’s Civil Engineering degree is ranked in the top 100 worldwide, while also offering the best facilities for students. Civil Engineering plays a part in everything you see, from buildings and roads to bridges and dams, and so much more. I believe that Civil Engineering will have a big impact in the future. Collaborated with technologies, structures will become more innovative in design and I want to be a part of that future.

“I would like to one day have my own company, involved in consulting and contracting. Ultimately, I’d like to give back to the community and help people in need by providing things such as shelter and necessities.”

Edbert enjoys the collaborative and supportive environment that he is a part of at UC.

“I enjoy meeting people of different cultural backgrounds, both students and staff. Studying with classmates also develops my teamwork skills. I have learnt to not become demotivated when study is difficult, but instead to remember to keep working hard, build connections with friends and never give up.”

Edbert’s connections with both UC and local clubs made for a smooth transition into life in a new country. These clubs provide opportunities for students to come together for social events such as dinners, quiz nights, guest speakers and tutorials to help with study.

“I am a part of club for UC students called YOUNG UC. It is a group that meets together to make students, especially international students, feel a sense of belonging.”

Edbert also had the opportunity to experience work in New Zealand, as he spent the summer working for a local construction company, HEB Construction.

“As part of my job I was able to assist in road construction and traffic management, as well as taking part in project meetings. It was an invaluable experience working with the local people and it taught me a lot about the working culture in New Zealand, while contributing to my work hours as part of my degree. It also helped me develop my character, and allowed me to travel outside and around Christchurch as part of the job.”

Outside of his time with HEB Construction, Edbert has also taken the opportunity to explore more of the South Island.

“New Zealand is a beautiful country, the nature of it is amazing. One of my favourite places to travel is on the scenic route of the South Island, and my favourite place to visit has been Queenstown. There are so many options for activities, adventure and food that you can experience. The opportunities to travel around New Zealand is one of the reasons why I chose to study here.”
