Studying towards a Master of Science in Biotechnology
What was the inspiration behind your studies?
While living and completing my undergraduate degree in the Middle East, furthering my education with a focus on plants didn’t seem like an option for me. I decided to come to UC because it provides a great variety of courses and hands-on experience.
I have always been fascinated by plants and their inner workings. Naturally, this fascination led me to apply my biotechnology background to further understand plant pathogens, their interaction with plants, and how this interaction is influenced by climate change.
And what plants are you researching in particular?
I am currently researching the effects of abiotic stress on Phytophthora pluvialis, which is a plant pathogen that affects pine tree species in New Zealand.
How have you found studying at UC so far?
The different courses I have taken in my first year of my master’s course has allowed me to understand different aspects of science and research. It has taught me to analyse and digitise information and apply it to real world settings. I have used and applied most, if not all, of my study in different aspects of my research.
The combination of coursework and research have provided me with the knowledge and tools to understand plant pathogens and work with them, not only on a physiological level but a molecular biological one as well. I have learnt about numerous equipment and techniques that I feel will benefit me as a researcher.
So the lab work has been a real highlight about studying here?
The campus and facilities at UC are by far my favourite part. The laboratories and research facilities are state-of-the-art, with fully functional green houses and libraries, these and much more have made UC incredibly enjoyable. The staff are friendly and easily approachable which makes it overall a good experience.
Any advice for other biology students to make the most of it?
Work hard and always ask questions. Don’t be scared to try out different areas of biology, if you aren’t sure what area you would want to focus on. UC has a great variety and staff studying vastly different aspects that may interest you.
Where to from here once you graduate?
Currently, I plan to persue a PhD and further expand on my master’s research. Eventually, I would like to work in a research-based field focusing on plant pathogens and biosecurity.
