HOW TO APPLY

Studying towards a PhD in Law

What are your researching for your Law thesis?

My research interest focuses on judicial studies. I am passionate about researching issues, such as judicial independence, judicial countability, different methods of courts administration, and judicial reform efforts. I specifically adopt a comparative approach.

My Master’s thesis centred on the judicial councils in France, England, and the Netherlands. In my PhD thesis, I focus on the lack of gender diversity of the judiciary in New Zealand, and the Australian State of Victoria. I explore judicial appointment processes, and initiatives and policies to improve judicial diversity in the two jurisdictions.

Why did you choose that topic?

The statistics on the proportion of judges indicate a lack of gender diversity in New Zealand and the Australian State of Victoria. The low percentage of women judges motivated me to investigate why there is a lack of gender diversity in the judiciary and how this problem can be tackled. These two jurisdictions have adopted different policies to tackle the lack of gender diversity in the judiciary. I intend to identify some factors which contribute to the gender diversity of the judiciary in the two jurisdictions.

What do you enjoy most about your research?

Doing a PhD was a great opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge about the impact of gender on different levels of peoples’ life. I am very passionate to investigate how the lack of gender diversity of the judiciary is addressed, where women could successfully achieve many of the top legal positions.

Also, I have great experience working with my supervisors. Their helpful comments and feedback improved my work significantly. Doing a PhD may sometimes be tough and challenging. However, at the end of the journey, your critical and analytical skills will improve beyond expectations.

So what advice would you give to someone considering studying a Law PhD?

They should be very passionate about their research as they will spend three years on their research. Also, it is very important to join different clubs and have an active social life. I think a balance between work and life is crucial for all people, particularly PhD students.

What do you enjoy about studying at UC?

Here at UC, we have a friendly office space. I had the chance to make friends with some postgraduate students from different parts of the world. We support each other in both our research and personal life.

In addition, we have a weekly morning tea and writing retreat. It is a good opportunity to get in touch with other academic staff in a friendly and informal place.

How have you found life at UC and New Zealand as an international student, coming from Iran?

Moving to another country is a challenging experience. However, I had the chance to meet a lot of great people from all around the world. I have learned about different cultures, explored different worldviews, and enjoyed various delicious foods.

Have you been awarded any scholarships?

Yes, I have been awarded UC Doctoral Scholarship. It provides sufficient financial support to only focus on my research.

What support services have helped you?

I have attended some of the workshops in the Academic Skills Centre. They discuss a variety of different topics that are essential for thesis writers. I strongly suggest all the postgraduate students attend the workshops and seminars, especially at the beginning of their research journey.

What are your interests when you are not studying?

I enjoy painting, particularly watercolour painting. Also, there are a lot of picturesque trails near Christchurch, where I go hiking or walking. I also like gardening, yoga, and meditation.
