"My studies have helped me understand the big picture and the significance of process delivery..."

HOW TO APPLY

Bachelor of Commerce in Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Strategy and Entrepreneurship

Originally from Singkawang city, Indonesia, Ying dreamed of managing her own business and decided to study a management programme. After much research with her agent, she chose to study for a Bachelor of Commerce in Operations and Supply Management at University of Canterbury (UC).

Her journey at UC started with UC International College (UCIC), the pathway provider for the University of Canterbury.

“The University Transfer Programme (UTP) helped me with the transition since I didn’t need to do a foundation course as other universities do,” she says.

“I believe a Bachelor of Commerce provides a strong foundation for operating a successful business. UC also offers a flexible degree structure that allowed me to take my double major, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, with no additional tuition fees,” she says.

Ying finds the UC facilities and services helpful, and the central library is her "place-to-be”.

“Friendly lecturers and UC’s online learning tools help me a lot during my studies.  UC has several modern and cosy buildings that are equipped with 24-hour study rooms, and the course advisors are very informative and approachable.”

She enjoys the beautiful and peaceful views that New Zealand offers, which is one of the main reasons she chose to come here.  She loves the balanced lifestyle and opportunities for professional growth that Christchurch offers.

Her professional life started with her first internship, where she cultivated teamwork and problem-solving skills.

“I took part in the UC Business School Global Virtual Micro-Internship Programme which is an intensive 3-week work programme. I was grouped with another 3 Indonesian UC students to conduct market research for our client, The New Zealand Truffle Management Company Limited. Initially, I found this internship programme challenging since I didn’t know about the topic. However, I found this programme awesome and valuable since I could apply it to my future career, especially in teamwork and problem-solving.”

Her time at UC has helped her understand the industry and prepare her for future challenges.

“My studies have helped me understand the big picture and the significance of process delivery. In the supply chain context, UC has taught me that adaptability, innovation, and efficient management are the keys to achieving smooth industry supply flow. This helps to boost my confidence and gives me a better understanding of how to approach my future career path.

“My advice to new students is to explore and seek experiences outside of their field of study. I strongly recommend joining UC clubs and organisations in order to broaden your network and gain access to a variety of interests.”
