UC alumnus Brian McLay was born in 1940 in Ōtautahi Christchurch. He studied Law at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury in the 1960s before beginning what became a lifelong career in the justice system.
His passion for law was kindled at UC and he became a strong advocate for the power of education. Brian met his wife Judith when they were both studying in the old Christchurch library, and the pair married in 1964. He passed on this passion for learning to their sons, Simon, Michael and Geoff, who is a law professor at Victoria University of Wellington.
Brian McLay passed away on Thursday 25 July 2024, aged 83.
