UC welcomes new students at Herea tō waka | Welcome Day

14 February 2025

UC’s Ilam campus came alive today as over 2300 new students arrived for Herea tō waka | Welcome Day, marking the first steps of their academic journey at UC.

HOW TO APPLY

With Semester 1 kicking off on Monday 17 February, Herea tō waka provides new students with an exciting introduction to life at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury (UC). Students took the opportunity to explore campus, meet their lecturers and student advisors, attend subject information sessions, and connect with their peers. The sun was shining and the campus buzzing with new students eager to get a head start on navigating their academic environment.

Choosing where to study is a significant decision, influenced by academic excellence, student support, and an engaging campus culture. UC provides a holistic experience, ensuring students have access to world-class learning opportunities and a strong support system. UC’s reputation as a future-focused institution is reflected in the dynamic mix of study options, which continues to evolve. Kia Angitu, UC’s internationally-renowned student success programme, provides first-year students with tailored guidance and resources, facilitating a smooth transition into university life and a strong academic foundation.

A vibrant campus life awaits new students, with over 130 clubs and societies, including the well-known Student Volunteer Army (SVA), providing opportunities to connect, engage, and contribute to the community. Situated in the heart of Ōtautahi Christchurch - ranked among the top 100 best student cities globally - UC offers endless opportunities for exploration and recreation, with all the conveniences of a modern city and a region that has been called ‘home to nature’s most diverse playground’. With affordable living, easy access to beaches and mountains, and a thriving urban culture, Christchurch is an ideal place to study and live. It’s no surprise that many UC graduates choose to stay, with half of those remaining in Aotearoa New Zealand, choosing to work in Waitaha Canterbury.

After hosting our biggest Open Day in 2024 and a successful Welcome Day for the 2025 cohort, UC is on track for a fourth consecutive year of record enrolments. The energy and enthusiasm of our new students reflect the strength and vibrancy of the UC community. We look forward to an exciting year ahead, filled with learning, discovery, and new opportunities for all.
