The UC Business School and members of the Department of Economics and Finance warmly congratulate John Small on being appointed Chair of the Commerce Commission.
At the University of Canterbury, John completed an Honours degree in Economics and progressed to a PhD in 1992, finishing his thesis in record time under the supervision of Prof. David Giles. During this time, John lectured in econometrics for two years. In 1994 he took up a senior lectureship at the University of Auckland. Throughout his academic career, John published in leading economics journals, notably the Journal of Econometrics.
John then moved into the private sector where he worked as a consultant at Covec for 17 years before moving to the Commerce Commission as an associate member, rising to full member soon thereafter.
John’s achievements throughout his career reflect well on his alma mater and are testimony to the University of Canterbury’s endeavour to provide its students with the skills necessary to realise their aspirations.
