Expert judges “blown away” by Final Showcase pitches

07 February 2019

The UCE EY Summer Startup Programme wrapped up for another year on Tuesday with UCE’s biggest ever Final Showcase event.

HOW TO APPLY

The successful 2018/19 UCE EY Summer Startup Programme finished with a bang at Tuesday night’s Final Showcase. At our largest Showcase for the programme to date, the top 12 businesses from the summer each presented a three-minute pitch, followed by questions from the judges.

If the judging line-up of Melissa Davies, Michael Durie, Michelle Sharp and Peter Montgomery wasn’t intimidating enough for the entrepreneurs presenting, the audience of over 200 people were also picking their favourite venture for the People’s Choice competition.

After the presentations, the event moved to the new UC Centre for Entrepreneurship space in the recently opened Rehua building, for drinks, nibbles and prize announcements. Because the quality of pitches was so high, the judges gave out a large number of awards.

Mentors-and-VC-with-Tayla-Johns Left to Right: UC Vice Chancellor Cheryl de la Rey, Equilibrium Equine founder Tayla Johns, and Chelsea Ziolo and David Winter from EY.

Congratulations to the entrepreneurs who won the following prizes:

Best Commercial Opportunity & People’s Choice
Tayla Johns from Equilibrium Equine won both Best Commercial Opportunity and the People’s Choice award with her innovative remote horse management technology.

Best Impact
The prize for Best Impact went to Ngārie Scartozzi of Eclean Envirotech, who have designed a bioreactor which removes and recovers nitrates from dairy farm runoff.

Best Pitch
Jack Andrews from acupressure mat business Lotus Mat Eco and Christy Kimble from music promotions firm Sub180 were both recognised with a Best Pitch award for their slick presentations.

Judge’s Commendation
Finally, Judge’s Commendation Prizes were awarded to Chelsea Aitken and Millie Morgan’s New Zealand and Beyond, a business connecting NZ SMEs to Chinese consumers, and to Tom Maslin’s Ignition Tutoring, which provides NCEA students with a better alternative to traditional tutoring services.

Thank you to the judges, mentors, speakers and sponsors who supported this year’s Summer Startup Programme, and to the summer students for their hard work over the last 10 weeks.
