Les Mills City2Surf is a race well-known by many Cantabrians and although running might not be top of the list for a celebration activity for some, it was a great team experience and an opportunity to come together and acknowledge UC’s 150th anniversary.

As part of our anniversary year, UC’s calendar is full of exciting events and initiatives, such as the city-to-surf running race. 150 staff and students were sponsored and joined by many members of community, including Whakarae | Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey who said it was a festive and fun event.

UCSA President Pierce Cowley shared the Vice-Chancellor’s opinion: “It was a great time seeing everyone out and about in the sunshine”.

To ensure everyone with any fitness level could participate, the amazing team at the University’s Rec Centre offered a 6-week training preparation package to ensure anyone could tackle their chosen distance.

Marketing Professor Ekant Veer said the sense of community made the event special and it was a great motivator to continue doing something that’s good for your mind and body..

“For me, this has to have been one of the standout events I have had the pleasure to be part of, in my almost 18 years of working at UC Rec&Sport.

“Our team had such a fantastic and fun time pulling all of this together, seeing our newest exercisers gain confidence and fitness, the bonding throughout the programme, the camaraderie on event day, and we even had a great time setting up at 7am on event day!” summarises Sport and Recreation Manager Kat Henderson the whole experience.
