Ground-breaking research is seeking to unlock the secrets of the sediment under Wellington Harbour.
University of Canterbury geotechnical experts are drilling and collecting sediment samples at CentrePort. Their research will further knowledge about how the ground behaves in seismic events. In addition to contributing to scientific knowledge, it’s informing CentrePort’s ongoing regeneration.
This project is the continuation of initiatives between CentrePort and various universities and other research organisations since the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake significantly impacted on the port.
The project is being led by Canterbury University’s Postdoctoral Fellow and Geotechnical Earthquake Engineer Claudio Cappellaro, Senior Lecturer and Sampling Expert Mark Stringer and Professor Misko Cubrinovski. Christchurch’s McMillan Drilling is carrying out the drilling work.
