About the Event
This is the New Zealand premiere of Steve Reich’s concert-length Drumming (1970-71), which is considered one of the most important works from the 20th Century. Inspired by his study of Balinese gamelan and West African rhythms, Reich expanded the sonic and rhythmic boundaries of Minimalism. This four-movement piece features four sets of tuned bongos, three marimbas, four glockenspiels, two singers and a piccolo flute. Come enjoy the mesmerising effect of voices fading in and out amidst the vibrant rhythmic tapestry of percussion reverberating in the space.
Led by Associate Professor Justin DeHart, UC Percussion Ensemble is the resident percussion ensemble at the University of Canterbury.
