From August 15-23, the NZIGE conducted the first Regional Biosafety Course in Honiara, Solomon Islands, in collaboration with the Island Knowledge Institute and under the direction of the National Biosafety Framework Project Coordinator for the Solomon Islands, Paul Roughan.
The course ran from August 15-23 and was attended by representatives from the private and public sectors (including health, foreign affairs, quarantine and legal fields), non-governmental organisations and educators
The course had lectures in biosafety-applied molecular biology, ecology, biodiversity, social impacts, and the role of public participation. The course also featured practical sessions on techniques for detecting GMOs in food.
The NZIGE hopes to continue its work in the Pacific region with more capacity building activities in 2006.
