Checklist - get yourself organised

10 November 2023

What you need to do to best prepare for your time at UC as an international student.

HOW TO APPLY

International student checklist:

  • Accept your Offer of Place in myUC.

  •  Pay the tuition fee estimate outlined in your Offer of Place. Email ar@canterbury.ac.nz with your UC student ID number and full name to request a receipt. This should be included in your student visa application.

  • Apply for your student visa on the Immigration New Zealand website (around four months in advance of your intended arrival/course start date).

  • Book your flights to Christchurch.

  • Register for the International Student Welcome  - attendance is compulsory for new international students.

  • Book a session to complete your enrolment in person.

  • Arrange your accommodation.

  • Review the insurance requirements for international students. If you don't want to purchase the default Studentsafe Inbound University Policy, you must purchase an approved alternative policy instead. If your policy is not listed on the approved list, you will need to apply to have your policy assessed at least four weeks before your Enrolment in Person session.

  • Select your courses in myUC.

  • Open a New Zealand bank account and transfer money before you arrive on campus. ANZ, Westpac, BNZ and ASB have branches close to campus.

  • Save the UC Security number +64 3 369 2888 in your phone along with New Zealand's emergency services number 111.

  • Upload a copy of your visa and the photo page of your passport to your Document Library in myUC before you attend your Enrolment in Person session.

  • Update your contact details in your profile in myUC, including the address where you will be living while studying at UC and your NZ mobile number. An emergency contact in NZ is also helpful.

  • Visit the Nau Mai website to find out more about studying in NZ.

  • When you attend your Enrolment in Person session, take your passport and visa with you, plus evidence of your UC-approved alternative insurance policy (if using).

  • Sign in to the PreUC International Induction site
