About our Master's degrees

18 March 2025

UC’s Master's degrees provide specialist knowledge and skills across a wide range of subjects.

HOW TO APPLY
UC offers three types of Master's degrees:

  • Research (thesis) Master's
  • Taught (coursework) Master's
  • a combination of both.

A Research Master’s degree advances your knowledge in the area of your previous studies, and enables you to conduct a significant piece of independent research (with supervision).

A Taught Master’s degree provides a structured programme of taught courses at an advanced level. In some cases, a Taught Master’s can allow you to undertake study in a different professional area from that of your first degree. Many offer applied learning opportunities, such as an independent project or industry placement.

A number of UC’s Master’s degrees allow for a combination of both courses and research.

Most of our Master's degrees can be completed in 1 year full-time, or within 2 years for those with projects or work placements.

Taught Master's require previous university studies, and are usually open to students of any subject background.

Research or combination Master's require previous university studies in a related subject area. Some of these degrees may also require a minimum grade point average (GPA) in your coursework, or may consider previous work experience.

For Research (thesis-only) Master's, you should also find a potential supervisor before applying for postgraduate study at UC. They will assess your suitability as a Master’s candidate based on your academic performance (often requiring supporting evidence), the matching between your research interests and theirs, and their availability and funding.

Admission to Master’s degrees can be competitive, and some may have additional requirements such as a resume, interviews, and more. Refer to the specific Master’s programme you are interested in for detailed entry requirements.

UC offers a number of doctoral degrees (such as the Doctor of Philosophy or PhD) in a range of subjects.

It is also sometimes possible to transfer to a PhD (or other doctoral degree) from a Master’s degree if your thesis and progress meets a particular standard.
