Roland Stead Ilam Gardens

13 January 2025

Filled with native and exotic plants and home to unique hybrid strains of azaleas and rhododendrons bred by renowned Christchurch botanist Edgar Stead, the Roland Stead Ilam Gardens have been enjoyed by generations of Cantabrians. Donate today to help preserve and enhance the gardens.

HOW TO APPLY

Started by UC alum and renowned Christchurch-born scientist Edgar Stead, the Ilam Gardens house his prized collections of unique hybrid rhododendrons and azaleas. The gardens are now home to a variety of plants, both native and exotic, and are open to members of the public.

In 2011, Edgar's son, artist Roland Stead, established a fund for the maintenance of the gardens.

By donating towards the Roland Stead Ilam Gardens, you contribute towards their enhancement and upkeep, ensuring that future generations of our community can continue to enjoy them.
