BE(Hons) 2005, MEM 2006

Principal Consultant at Poh Consulting Limited

National Growth Lead, Rubix

HOW TO APPLY

After graduating from UC with a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (2004) and Masters in Engineering Management (2005), Warren spent a year as UCSA President before embarking on his professional career.

Since 2007, Warren has been primarily based in Christchurch but working across New Zealand. Warren began at a consulting engineering company, Cosgroves and developed his passion for projects, people, and problem-solving.

Later, Warren moved to Hawkins in a post-EQ Christchurch environment before joining two other UC alumni to grow Olsson Fire and Risk - a specialist fire engineering consultancy. This specialist Fire Engineering Consulting firm was then acquired by GHD to provide a new service offering for the multi-discipline global consultancy company. More recently, Warren has started his own consultancy company providing specialist relationship development services to companies in the construction industry.

You’ve certainly got your plate full these days in your role at Rubix. What could a day in the life look like for you?

No two days are the same, which keeps things exciting. As National Growth Lead at Rubix, I spend my time connecting with clients, understanding their challenges, and working with our teams to develop solutions that actually make a difference. Some days are full of meetings and strategy sessions, others involve site visits or workshops with our people. I also focus on spotting opportunities for Rubix to grow and evolve — it’s a role that constantly keeps me learning.

You also sit on multiple school boards, as well as being the Chair of the Christchurch Netball Centre – what do these roles mean to you?

These roles are all about giving back. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors and supportive communities along the way, and now I get to contribute to organisations that matter to our community. On school boards, I help guide strategy and ensure the schools can give their students the best opportunities. At Christchurch Netball Centre, it’s about enabling participation, supporting pathways for players, and fostering a strong sporting community. Making a positive impact through education and sport is incredibly rewarding.

You’ve maintained a fantastic connection with UC since your study days. Tell us a bit about your involvement with the UCSA.

My time with UCSA was a highlight of my university experience. I started with ENSOC and eventually became UCSA President in 2006. Leading student initiatives and representing my peers taught me a lot about teamwork, leadership, and advocacy — lessons I carry into my career every day. I’ve stayed close to UC since graduating, and the networks, friendships, and values I built there continue to shape how I work and live.

What excites you about working and living in Ōtautahi Christchurch?

Christchurch is full of energy and opportunity. The city has transformed so much since the earthquakes, and being part of projects that shape its future is exciting. There’s a real sense of collaboration across business, government, education and the community. For me this drives innovation which makes it an inspiring place to work. Outside of work, it’s a great place to live, with sport, outdoors, and culture all on your doorstep. And traffic which means you have about a twenty minute drive to most things.

What career advice would you offer to our recent graduates?

Stay curious and keep learning, your degree is just the start. Don’t shy away from opportunities, even if you don’t feel completely ready; some of the biggest growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone. Build strong relationships, keep your integrity, and enjoy the journey. For me, my career hasn’t been a straight line, and the detours I’ve had have taught me a lot.
