MusB Performance 2022

NHS Music Therapist Trainee

HOW TO APPLY

You are currently completing your final year as a music therapist trainee. What will your role as a music therapist look like?

My role as a music therapist is to utilise music as a therapeutic tool and psychological intervention to assist individuals whose lives have been affected by illness, injury or (primary or secondary) disability by supporting their emotional, psychological, cognitive, communicative, physical, and social needs. You will see music therapists working in different settings, such as schools, hospitals, hospices, care homes, prisons, forensic services, psychiatric units, therapy centres and private practice. I am currently interested in working with young children with learning disabilities.

What inspired you to pursue a career path as a music therapist?

At the age of fifteen, I had the privilege of volunteering at an orphanage in Malaysia for children and young people with physical and mental disabilities. Witnessing the transformative power of music in bridging language and cultural barriers, I discovered its potential as an effective communication, creative and expressive tool. Through music, we facilitated educational experiences while fostering confidence, another way of expression, and developing a powerful bond. This experience ignited my interest in music therapy, as it allowed me to channel my love and passion for music into a therapeutic and healing modality, empowering individuals to discover their voice through music – an alternate non-verbal way of expression – in our ever-evolving society.

How has your Bachelor of Music majoring in Music Performance from UC helped to prepare you for your Master's study?

Throughout my Bachelor's study, I have been exposed to a diverse range of musical genres and styles, providing invaluable preparation for my role as a music therapist. This exposure is particularly beneficial as I work with clients from various ethnicities and cultural backgrounds, allowing me to draw upon a wide repertoire of music. Although my primary focus was Classical music during my studies at UC, my professors encouraged me to explore improvisation, a fundamental practice in my therapeutic work. Additionally, the opportunity to collaborate with talented musicians among my peers and classmates has expanded my musical knowledge, listening skills, adaptability, and cultural awareness. It has also nurtured an empathetic approach, enabling me to establish meaningful (musical) connections with my clients as a music therapist.

Were you involved with any clubs during your time at UC? What were your fondest memories of your involvement in these?

Certainly! During my time at UC, I had the valuable opportunity to be involved in various extracurricular activities and clubs that significantly enriched my personal and professional growth. I actively participated as a committee member of Young UC; a multicultural Christian club dedicated to prioritising the well-being of international students at UC. Moreover, I was fortunate enough to be the music director for the annual musical production of the Canterbury Malaysian Students' Association (CMSA), a Malaysian club at UC. Engaging in these activities allowed me to develop essential life skills, establish meaningful connections, and create a close-knit and supportive community in New Zealand, despite being far away from home.

We see you are now living in London! What advice would you give to a graduate looking to move overseas at the completion of their studies?

Embracing the motto of Nike, just do it! I have undergone a remarkable transformation in my perspective towards moving overseas to a new country. Previously averse to change and closed off to this idea, I now firmly believe that life's brevity necessitates seizing the multitude of opportunities available in our vast world. By venturing into new experiences, you not only gain valuable knowledge about your profession and the city/country you reside in but also embark on a journey of self-discovery, unravelling your true passions in life and encountering new ones! The willingness to step outside your comfort zone opens doors to immense personal growth, broadening your horizons and shaping your understanding of the world and yourself. Embrace the vastness of possibilities and seize the chance to fully immerse yourself in the richness that life has to offer, even if it's overseas! Wherever you find yourself and whatever you pursue, pursue it with unwavering passion.

Any other highlights of your time at UC that you'd like to share?

Participating in clubs' activities and social events with classmates offered me a sense of familiarity, inclusiveness, and a friendly environment where I had abundant opportunities to engage with individuals from diverse backgrounds and listen to their unique stories. These interactions have led to the formation of lasting friendships. My time at UC has provided me with the privilege of connecting with people from various walks of life, expanding my horizons and fostering a deeper understanding of music, diverse cultures, and perspectives. These experiences have enriched my journey and equipped me with the adaptability needed for my new venture in London. I hold fond memories of the music building located at Christchurch city centre, where we practised and played music, as well as performed in lunchtime concerts. I remember passers-by would sit on the benches, captivated by the melodies. And, of course, I cherish the late-night meals at Maccas, a student-friendly spot that kept me fuelled!
