Hossein started his PhD at the University of Canterbury in 2018 after a decade of professional experience as a structural engineer. In his PhD research, he developed a simple and reasonably accurate method which can be used by structural engineers to estimate the change in displacement demands of structures due to torsional response. This method, which is based on first principal mechanics and considers dynamic characteristics of structures, was generalized so it is applicable to buildings under bidirectional excitation and torsional eccentricities. He also investigated the accuracy of current code-based analysis methods and has proposed some modifications to them to improve their accuracy as well as conservatism. Hossein has joined Holmes Consulting and is enjoying dealing with challenges of designing structures in seismic regions again.
“Buildings with stiffness eccentricities are likely to suffer from the excessive deformation demands due to torsional response. This can even become worse when the structure experiences inelastic behaviour. What this research looked at is to what extent the torsional response due to stiffness/strength eccentricity affects the seismic performance of the building and what a simple design method to account for this issue should be”
Hossein started working as a consulting engineer in 2007 and has been involved in a variety of projects including a 34-Story Twin Towers Office Building designed according to the latest seismic design guidelines. He has had challenges in different aspects of mid to high rise buildings analysis and design such as ground motion selection, structural system and material selection, capacity design to provide a stable inelastic mechanism, ductile detailing of designated nonlinear zones etc. Hossein received the University of Canterbury Doctoral Scholarship (2018-2021)
