Chinese Tea House

The Chinese Tea House provides an opportunity for anyone to practise speaking Chinese with a native speaker or learn more about Chinese culture. It's offered by UC's Confucius Institute and is open to everyone – staff, students, and the general public. Learn more about our Chinese Tea House.

HOW TO APPLY

Chinese Tea House

The Chinese Tea House is a series of culturally integrated language sessions designed for anyone interested in Chinese culture. It offers a unique opportunity to learn, explore, converse, and practice in an engaging environment. Organised by the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury, the sessions are open to all, with no prior knowledge of the Chinese language required.

Chinese Tea House sessions are held weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 3:00 to 4:30 pm in Room 213, 2nd Floor, James Loggie Building, UC campus. Participation is generally free; however, a small fee may apply for sessions involving food preparation.

Themes planned for 2025 include, but are not limited to:

  • Chinese New Year Celebrations – Mahjong culture, decorations, Lantern Festival
  • Tea Culture
  •  Dragon Boat Festival
  • Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival)
  • Chongyang Festival
  • Modern Folk Culture – Square dancing, popular games
  • Food
  • Modern China
  • Chinese Poetry
  • Costume and Dress
  • People’s Lives
  • Regional Cultures in China

Detailed information about each session will be provided two weeks in advance, and topics may be adjusted based on participants' interests. Each session is limited to a maximum of 10 participants, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that if there is insufficient interest in a particular theme, the session may be rescheduled for another time.
