As well as paying your fees, you need enough money to cover your bond, rent in advance, and more. Get a living costs estimate for flatting at UC.

Here is a breakdown of what you are likely to pay per week if you rent privately, plus a list of associated annual and one-off costs. 

These figures are based on a single person sharing a 4-bedroom house.  Costs associated with personal lifestyle are not included but will have an impact on how much you spend each week.


WEEKLY COST ESTIMATES - $416

Shared rental accommodation - $180
Costs vary depending on the area you live in and the number of people in the flat.  This figure is based on an average 4 bedroom house in Ilam shared by 4 people.  The median rent in Ilam 1 August 2023 - 31 January 2024 was $720.  This does not factor in if the property is furnished or not or the condition of the property - www.tenancy.govt.nz

Power - $20
Will vary depending on your consumption and number of flatmates between $15 to $25.

Internet - $8
Depending on your plan and number of flatmates costs vary from $6 to $10 per week.

Mobile phone - $8
Cost will vary on use and if you are using pre-paid or a plan.  

Food - $145
Will vary depending on your diet and how often you eat out.

Transport - $25
This will vary depending on your chosen mode of transport.

Contents and Liability Insurance - $10
Check out packages offered by insurance companies.  

Other - $20
Incidentals such as emergencies, entertainment - costs will depend on what you choose to do.

Additional Annual or one-off costs

Bond (refundable minus damage or unpaid rent) - $720
This is a deposit for your tenancy paid to your landlord before you move in, usually 1 to 4 weeks' rent.

Rent in advance - $360
Most landlords will require you to pay your rent in advance of 1-2 weeks.

Furnishings - $750
Depending on what you need and if you buy new or second-hand, costs can vary between $500 to $1,000.

Books and stationery - $750
Depending on your programme of study this can vary between $500 to $1,000 per year. Check with your lecturer before purchasing should resources be available online or from the UC Library.

Parking - $475
If you have a car and want to park on campus you need to pay parking fees - either hourly, daily or annually.

Clothing - $750
Depending on your budget, clothing can cost between $600 - $900 per year.
