Living costs estimate - halls of residence

As well as paying your fees, you'll need to make sure you have enough money to cover your accommodation and living costs. Get a living costs estimate for halls of residence at UC.

Here is a breakdown of what you are likely to pay per week if you stay in a Halls of Residence, plus a list of associated annual and one-off costs.


WEEKLY COST ESTIMATE - $504

Hall of residence accommodation - $272
Costs vary from hall to hall between $166 to $344 (self-catered) to between $431 to $645 (fully-catered).  The example provided is for a Kowhai 6-bedroom self-catered apartment at Ilam Student Accommodation and includes power and laundry facilities on a 48-week contract.

Internet - $0
Unlimited Wifi access for UC students.

Mobile phone - $8
Cost will vary on use and if you are using pre-paid or a plan.

Food - $194
Will vary depending on whether you are living in a fully-catered or self-catered hall. Catering is currently valued at $194.

Contents and Liability Insurance - $10
Check out packages offered by insurance companies.  

Other - $20
Incidentals such as emergencies, entertainment - costs will depend on what you choose to do.

ADDITIONAL ANNUAL OR ONE-OFF COSTS - $3305.29

Administration fee (part of your deposit) - $300
This fee is non-refundable and varies between $300 to $550.  The example is for the Ilam Student Accommodation.

Resident/student association fee (part of your deposit) - $300
This fee is used to help fund student activities and varies between $200 to $350.  The example is for the Ilam Student Accommodation.

Contingency fee (refundable minus damage or unpaid rent) (part of your deposit) - $400
This is a payment made at the start of the year in case of possible loss/damage of accommodation buildings or property and varies between $250 to $500.  The example is for the Ilam Student Accommodation.

Books and stationery - $750
Depending on your programme of study this can vary between $500 to $1,000 per year.  Check with your lecturer before purchasing should resources be available online or from the UC Library.

Parking - $600
If you have a car and want to park it at the hall you need to pay an annual fee that varies from hall to hall from $250 to $600.  The example is for the Ilam Student Accommodation.

Bed linen pack - $205.29
For halls that do not provide linen.

Clothing - $750
Depending on your budget, clothing can cost between $600 - $900 per year.
