The annual University and Tertiary Sport New Zealand Championship sees all eight universities, and a range of other tertiary institutions compete in eight sporting championships held throughout the academic year. Points are awarded at each event based on final placings, from which an overall champion institution is awarded.

UC is a high performing institute and were the top placed South Island team in 2018 and 2019. In 2021 & 2022 UC placed 2nd overall. In 2023 UC was the first University to place 1st in both the Spirit Award and Overall placings. In 2024, UC defended their title and retained the Shield, making them back to back champions in both 2023 & 2024.
