Scholarships available for students intending to enrol in their first year of an undergraduate Engineering, Forestry, Product Design or Mathematics and Statistics degree at UC in 2025.

This is a list of Scholarships that are available for students intending to enrol at UC in the first year of an undergraduate degree in the Engineering, Forestry, Product Design or Mathematics and Statistics areas in 2025. 

Each scholarship has different eligibility criteria so check the details of each one to find out if you're eligible. 

We recommend you apply for all the scholarships you are eligible for, as it is possible to be awarded more than one scholarship at a time. 

Please note that this information may be subject to change.

The following scholarships all close on the 15th August 2024 unless otherwise noted.

Engineering

Scholarship NameScholarship Overview
Aruhiko - Power Engineering Excellence Trust Incoming First-Year Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship supports and promotes study in the BE(Hons) programmes at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $3,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical & Electronic Engineering.

Other relevant information: Applicants are accepted from those who have never been enrolled in a degree programme at any tertiary institute. 

DIALOG Fitzroy University of Canterbury Engineering Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship supports undergraduate Engineering students at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury from the Taranaki region.

Value: One year scholarship = $5,000; Two year scholarship = $15,000 per annum

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students from the Taranaki region intending to enrol in a Bachelor or Engineering (Hons) in Chemical & Process Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Natural Resources Engineering.

Other relevant information: Applicants must be completing a university entrance qualification in the Taranaki region in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior). 

Edna Waddell Undergraduate Scholarships for Women

Purpose: The Edna Waddell scholarships are for women entering their first year of full time study for undergraduate degrees in professional engineering or technology at New Zealand universities.

Value: $5,000

Who is eligible: Female first-year undergraduate students studying Technology or Engineering.

Other relevant information: Closing date is 01 September. This scholarship is administered by Universities NZ

Tait Foundation WiE CAN Scholarship

Purpose: The scholarship supports those who attended the Women in Engineering residentialprogramme (WiE CAN) at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury and arein their first year of a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree BE(Hons).

Value: $5,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme.

Other relevant information: Applicants must have participated in the WiE CAN residential programme at UC in 2024.

Tait Foundation Women in Engineering Scholarship

Purpose: The scholarship supports female students starting their first year of a programme for a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree (BE (Hons)) at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $2,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate female students intending to enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme.

UC Engineering International Scholarship

Purpose: To recognise top international scholars and support them in study towards an undergraduate Engineering degree at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $15,000 towards tuition fees

Who is eligible: First-year full-fee-paying international undergraduate students who are currently studying at a secondary school in Aotearoa New Zealand. If you are studying offshore or at UCIC, please refer to the separate October/March application rounds listings. Applicants may not be a citizen of Aotearoa New Zealand or Australia, hold an Aotearoa New Zealand residence class visa, or be a Permanent Resident of Australia.

Other relevant information: Applicants must be intending to enrol full-time in a BE(Hons) degree programme.

UC Engineering Māori Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports high achievers amongst ākonga Māori (Māori students) entering their first year of a BE(Hons) degree programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $5,000 or $3,000 or $1,000

Who is eligible: First-year Māori undergraduate students intending to enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme.

Other relevant information: Open to students commencing their first undergraduate year.

UC Engineering Pacific Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports high-achieving Pacific students entering their first year of a BE(Hons) degree programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha University of Canterbury.

Value: $5,000or $3,000 or $1,000

Who is eligible: First-year Pacific undergraduate students intending to enrol full-time in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme.

Other relevant information: Open to students commencing their first undergraduate year.

UC Engineering Top Achievers Scholarship

Purpose: The scholarship recognises and supports top achievers entering their first year of study in a BE(Hons) degree programme at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $5,000 per annum, or $1,500 per annum for two years

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) programme.

Other relevant information: Applicants must have studied at secondary level either (1) in Aotearoa New Zealand, or (2) overseas at Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu. International students who meet these requirements are eligible to apply. 

Wairarapa Takahē UC Engineering Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports promising students from the Masterton District1 who intend to complete a programme for an undergraduate degree in Civil or Natural Resources Engineering at the University of Canterbury.

Value: $4,500

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students who studied in the territory of the Masterton District Council intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil or Natural Resources Engineering.

Other relevant information: Applicants must be completing a university entrance qualification in the territory of the Masterton District Council in the year of application (or, in the case of a gap year, in the year immediately prior).

Forestry

Scholarship NameScholarship Overview
UC School of Forestry High Achievers Award

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports high-achieving students entering their first year of the Bachelor of Forestry Science (BForSc) degree programme at the University of Canterbury.

Value: $2,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Forestry Science.

Other relevant information: Applicants must have studied at secondary level either (1) in Aotearoa New Zealand, or (2) overseas at Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu. International students who meet these requirements are eligible to apply.

WIDE Trust Undergraduate Scholarship                  

Purpose: Funded by the Wood Industry Development and Education (WIDE) Trust, this scholarship is to support undergraduate study related to Forestry at UC. 

Value: Financial assistance at the value of $10,000 for one year.

Who is eligible:  Applicants must be enrolled, or intending to enrol, full-time at UC in one of the following: (a) the First Year of a BForSc programme; or (b) the Second Year of a BE(Hons) programme in Forest Engineering in the year following application. Applicants must be Aotearoa New Zealand citizens.

Other relevant information: Applications close 27 November (NB: yet to be confirmed for 2024 and if offered, see scholarship details for separate application form).

Product Design

UC Product Design Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports creative and academically strong students entering their first year of a programme at the University for a Product Design degree.

Value: $5,000 per annum for up to two years

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in a Bachelor of Product Design.

Mathematics & Statistics

AIMS Scholarship                                    

Purpose: This scholarship recognises high-achieving secondary-level students who have completed the course MATH 199 AIMS – Advancing in Mathematical Sciences at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury.

Value: $5,000

Who is eligible: All first-year undergraduate students who completed MATH199: AIMS - Advancing in Mathematical Science at UC.

Other relevant information: The scholarship will be offered to all eligible candidates who receive an A+ grade in the course MATH199: AIMS - Advancing in Mathematical Sciences at UC. NO SEPARATE APPLICATION IS REQUIRED.

UC Mathematics and Statistics Aspire Scholarship                           

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports students with high potential at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury who are entering their first year of a programme for a BA, BDataSci, or BSc degree and majoring in Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics.

Value: $2,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in a BSc, BDataSci or BA with a major in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or Financial Engineering.

Other relevant information: Enrolment in specific courses is required.

UC Mathematics and Statistics Māori Aspire Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports Māori students with high potential at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury who are entering their first year of a programme for a BA, BDataSci, or BSc degree and majoring in Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics.

Value: $2,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate Māori students intending to enrol in a BSc, BDataSci or BA with a major in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or Financial Engineering.

Other relevant information: Enrolment in specific courses is required.

UC Mathematics and Statistics Pacific Aspire Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises and supports Pacific students with high potential at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury who are entering their first year of a programme for a BA, BDataSci, or BSc degree and majoring in Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics.

Value: $2,000

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate Pacific students intending to enrol in a BSc, BDataSci or BA with a major in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or Financial Engineering.

Other relevant information: Enrolment in specific courses is required.

UC Mathematics and Statistics STAR Scholarship

Purpose: This scholarship recognises outstanding performance in MATH 199, the STAR course at Te Kura Pāngarau | School of Mathematics and Statistics of Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha | University of Canterbury, and supports students majoring in Applied Data Science, Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences, Data Science, Financial Engineering, Mathematics, or Statistics at the University.

Value: $5,000 per annum for three years

Who is eligible: First-year undergraduate students intending to enrol in at least 60 points per academic year of taught courses that contribute to a degree programme with a major in: Applied Data Science; or Computational and Applied Mathematical Sciences; or Data Science; or Financial Engineering; or Mathematics; or Statistics.

Other relevant information: Closing date 01 November. Applicants must be enrolled in the STAR course offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University (MATH 199).
