Alexander Fraser was born in Scotland in 1877 and trained as a sculptor and stonemason. He came to New Zealand to teach modeling and carving at Wellington Technical College from 1901 to 1910. Fraser returned to the UK where he worked as a draughtsman for the British Flying Corps and studied at the Royal College of Art. He returned to New Zealand in 1937 and undertook a number of sculptural commissions. These included works commemorating the New Zealand Forces' service in France at Le Quesnoy and Amiens. He died in 1953.
