Morgan Jones was born in Surrey, England, in 1934. While in England, Jones spent a large portion of his younger days on his grandfather’s farm, but also witnessed the violence of World War II
firsthand in London. Jones later worked in the forestry service, where he taught himself woodcarving. On his arrival in New Zealand in 1955 Jones settled in Christchurch, attending the Christchurch Teachers’ Training College from 1958-59. After teachers college he began to seriously pursue woodworking and moved into producing sculptural works. Since then Jones has exhibited steadily throughout New Zealand and abroad, and is represented in many public collections including the Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin art galleries.
